Dow’s Melanie Kalmar Receives Prestigious ORBIE Award; The award honors technology leaders for their leadership and the business value created through innovation

Melanie Kalmar, Chief Information Officer and Chief Digital Officer of Dow, recently received the prestigious ORBIE CIO of the Year Award, which recognizes technology leaders for outstanding leadership and the business value created through technology innovation.

Kalmar was awarded the Super Global ORBIE for organizations with over $20 billion in annual revenue and with multinational operations.

“It is an honor to be a 2022 National ORBIE Award (Winner),” Kalmar said in a statement released by Midland-based Dow. “I’m incredibly proud of what the Dow team has accomplished together over the past few years as we continue to reinvent how we use digital to enhance both the employee and customer experience.”

According to Dow spokesperson JD Sterba, Kalmar has been responsible for driving digital adoption that has made Dow a more customer-centric organization. The company’s sales through digital and online channels are on track to exceed $12 billion this year, and its investments in high-throughput research, artificial intelligence and machine learning have accelerated innovation and the speed to market up to 100 times.

One of the biggest challenges of COVID-19 has been the rapid adoption of digital technologies that have helped keep people safe, healthy and productive. The past two years have highlighted the critical role of digitalization for all businesses. Thanks to Kalmar’s leadership, a digital Dow was already a reality long before the pandemic.

Kalmar also holds several leadership roles focused on driving Dow’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, including as executive sponsor of PRIME, the employee resource group focused on people engagement. over 50 years of business. She is also a longtime advocate for promoting STEM careers for young girls and women, having dedicated years of service to the Michigan Council of Women in Technology and serving as its 2020 president.

On July 28, for the first time ever, ORBIE winners from across the United States gathered in person for the National ORBIE Awards in Atlanta, Georgia.
